Gather the ingredients for chocolate banana brownies
The first thing you need to do is gather all the ingredients to throw together these yummy brownies. To start the batter, you will need butter, white sugar, large eggs, and vanilla extract. The recipe also calls for some very ripe bananas, so keep that in mind when you're making your selections.
When you hit up the baking aisle, throw cocoa powder and all-purpose flour in your cart. Last but not least, you will need some baking soda and dark chocolate chips.
Start your prep work and mix the wet ingredients
Before you think about doing anything else, turn your oven to 350 F. We always suggest this as the first step so the oven will be ready when you finish the prep work.
Next, grab an 8x8-inch square pan and line it with parchment paper. Be sure to also grease the inside of the pan. This will prevent the parchment and the brownies from sticking to the bottom.
Take out a large mixing bowl that's big enough to fit the bulk of your ingredients. Toss in the butter, sugars, and eggs, then mix in the vanilla extract and pre-mashed banana.
Mix your batter and bake the brownies
Now, move onto your dry ingredients. Take out another bowl and add your cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder. Use a whisk to mix everything together.
Grab the bowl with your dry ingredients and begin to sift it into the bowl with the wet ingredients. Gently fold everything together until it's well combined. Next, add your dark chocolate chips and fold again. Be sure to mix well so you have a little bit of chocolate chip in each part of the batter.
Transfer the mixture into your prepared pan and bake for 30–40 minutes. You can check the doneness by poking a skewer in the center and seeing if it comes out clean (a few moist crumbs are okay).
Cool and serve
When you remove the brownies from the oven, let them cool in the pan for about 15 minutes. Then, transfer the brownies to a wire rack and let them cool completely before cutting them.
These are great on their own, but Brookes also provides a few serving suggestions. "[Serve them] with more fresh banana, berries, ice cream, cream, or chocolate sauce," she says.
If you don't eat these all in the first day, don't sweat it. "Leftovers should be good for 3 days at room temperature in airtight container," Brookes shares. We hope these sweet treats hit the spot.

Can I add other mix-ins to this banana brownie recipe?
Bananas have a sweet, relatively neutral flavor, and they work great alongside a number of other fruits. Classic berries — blue, black, straw, or rasp — are delicious additions. Or, you can give your brownies a tropical flair by adding pineapple or mango alongside some shredded coconut. You'll want to be careful about introducing too much moisture, so a cooked fruit jam is usually a better bet than raw chunks. The latter could lead to uneven cooking and might sink to the bottom during the bake.
You can take cues from a banana split and include any (or all) of that dish's classic ingredients — crushed peanuts, maraschino cherries, or strawberry jam would be ideal. For extra flavor without added texture, try introducing warming spices of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, or cloves in spare amounts. One of our best smoothie recipes features bananas alongside tahini, and the nutty paste could add a unique flair to and diminish the sweetness of these fudgy brownies.
