GE Appliances Is Recalling Some Of Its Refrigerators After Reported Injuries
The kitchen can often be a dangerous place if you're not careful. Whether it be the risk of an oven fire or the chance of something boiling over on the stove, you never know what can happen. The refrigerator isn't normally an appliance you'd have to exercise much caution with, but if you have a particular model from GE Appliances manufactured between February 2020 and August 2021, you may be eligible for a repair or replacement.
According to a recall advisory from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, the brand's French Door Refrigerators are now considered a fall hazard due to 71 reports of the freezer handle malfunctioning that resulted in 37 injuries, three of which were serious falls. This applies to six different versions of GE French Door Refrigerators, specifically model numbers GFE26JYMKFFS, GFE26JYMNFFS GNE27EYMKFFS, GNE27EYMNFFS, GNE27JYMKFFS, and GNE27JYMNFFS, which are 36-inches wide and feature bottom opening freezers and fingerprint-resistant stainless steel. The company advises consumers to check the label of their refrigerator, located on the inside of the refrigerator on the top left side.
What should you do if your refrigerator is part of the recall?
If you checked the model number printed inside your fridge and it matched any of the ones shared by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, you'll simply need to contact GE Appliances. As per the CPSC's instructions, either call toll-free at 888-345-4671 from 8 am to 5 pm ET Monday through Friday, or file a report through the GE Appliances website, and make sure to have both the model and serial number when you do so.
Upon contacting the company, a representative will confirm if your refrigerator is one of the approximately 155,000 affected by the recall, and will then schedule an in-home servicing and provide information on how to safely use your freezer in the meantime. This service is free of charge, and whether or not your freezer handle has malfunctioned or not, GE Appliances will replace the mounting fasteners and re-install the handle.
