This Region Of The World Consumes More Coffee Than Anywhere Else
Whether you prefer an easy morning instant coffee or take your time sipping a rich espresso, know you're a part of an international club of caffeinated aficionados. World Population Review lists coffee as one of the top exported commodities — second only to oil. From independent brewing houses to international brands, coffee has become a staple in households and restaurants around the world. And the coffee statistics only continue to rise: per Statista, over 166 million bags of coffee, each weighing more than 132 pounds, are brewed and savored each year.
In Brazil alone, a survey conducted by the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics found that Brazilians enjoy nearly 21 gallons of coffee per person annually (via The Brazil Business). According to the International Coffee Organization, Brazil also leads the pack of natural coffee bean producers, sending millions of Arabica and Robusta beans to countries near and far. But who's responsible for all this coffee drinking and is one area of the world more caffeinated than others?
Coffee fanatics are especially found in this region
With a history trailing back to the 10th century, it's clear coffee is here to stay. And World Population Review is keeping receipts: from the Finnish daily habit of four cups of coffee followed by Norwegian's three, European countries make up the bulk of worldwide coffee drinkers. Iceland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, and Luxembourg (in a tie with Canada) are close behind, placing Europe in the lead of international coffee fans by a considerable margin.
The European Coffee Federation reports that 2.5 million tons of coffee are consumed yearly throughout the European Union; that's nearly nine pounds of coffee per person! This clearly makes Europe the region of the world that consumes more coffee than anywhere else.
This said, with consistent upward trends, coffee's universal popularity shows no signs of slowing down. So whether you're heading out for your morning cup or planning a coffee destination for your next travel itinerary, rest assured you'll be able to find coffee no matter which part of the world you're in.
