Driscoll's Announced A New Strawberry Just In Time For Summer

Is it possible to reinvent the strawberry? According to Driscoll's latest launch, the answer appears to be a resounding "yes."

Over the past few years, specialty and high-end strawberries have gained traction among consumers. Specifically, Oishii's Omakase strawberry has made waves for its $4 to $6 price tag per berry (via Food Network). Similarly, Pineberries and other white strawberry varieties — known for having a sweeter, more tropical flavor than your standard red strawberries — have become available in many supermarkets, reported Southern Living.

According to a recent press release, Driscoll's is tapping back into the specialty strawberry trend with its newest release, the Tropical Bliss berry. This strawberry is the third of its kind in the brand's premium collection, joining Driscoll's two other specialty strawberry releases — Rosé strawberries and Sweetest Batch strawberries. In addition to its specialty strawberry collection, Driscoll's sells premium raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries in similar flavors. The lineup aims to provide consumers with berries that encompass all sensory aspects of the berry-eating experience.

What makes Driscoll's Tropical Bliss strawberries unique?

From a purely visual perspective, the Tropical Bliss berries have a very different look from your average strawberry. Rather than being a vibrant red color, these strawberries come in shades of white and yellow. In terms of flavor, the press release shares they have a similar sweetness to regular strawberries, but a taste that evokes tropical punch, pineapple, and passionfruit.

Perhaps unexpectedly, the Tropical Bliss strawberries (as well as the other specialty berries in the collection) were created through traditional plant breeding methods, rather than being genetically modified.

As stated above, alongside Tropical Bliss strawberries, Driscoll's offers the Rosé and Sweetest Batch varieties. Its Rosé strawberries are light pink in color, provide a sweet and juicy eating experience, and feature flavor notes like pink lemonade and peach. As their name suggests, Sweetest Batch strawberries are ultra-sweet and evocative of strawberry candy and fruit punch.

Because all three of these strawberries are seasonal, only a limited supply will be available throughout spring and summer.
