MasterChef, which consistently lands in the number one spot for unscripted TV (via Variety), began as MasterChef USA, a spin-off from the UK's MasterChef, which aired in 2000 as a limited two-season series, according to TV Over Mind. In 2010, MasterChef USA returned but rebranded as MasterChef.

Hosted by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, home cooks are given four challenges — an elimination test, a team challenge, a pressure test, and the fan-favorite mystery box — across one to two episodes. Contestants are booted off after the elimination and pressure tests.

MasterChef began with 14 contestants vying for the number one spot. Over the years, the number of contestants increased to between 20 and 24, with season 10 offering an astounding 36 aspiring chefs.
