Chipotle Is Testing Another Flavor Of Its Cauliflower Rice
Fans of Chipotle's cauliflower rice have a new flavor-packed menu item to look forward to. Since launching in Denver, Colorado in 1993, Chipotle has grown into the country's second-largest Mexican chain by offering quick, customizable burritos, bowls, tacos, and more (via Restaurant Business). Now, the company is looking to draw more grain-free diners to its restaurants with the addition of a new Keto and Paleo-approved base.
In a press release, the fast-casual chain announced the debut of a new flavor of cauliflower rice, which will be initially rolled out in a select number of Chipotle restaurants for a pilot run. The new Mexican Cauliflower Rice, which — like the chain's original cauliflower rice — will be made in-restaurant daily with fresh riced cauliflower, will feature a bold blend of spices meant to evoke the taste of traditional Mexican rice.
The initial run of the plant-based dish, which is flavored with paprika, cumin, garlic, and salt, will take place at 60 Chipotle locations across Southern California, Arizona, and Wisconsin. Customers will be able to add the Mexican cauliflower rice to any burrito bowl, salad, or other entrées — or order a side of the rice for an additional cost.
Chipotle first launched Cilantro-Lime Cauliflower Rice last year
Chipotle first launched its plant-based faux rice at the start of 2021, offering a new base option suitable for adherents of the Keto, Paleo, and Whole30 diets (via Chipotle). The chain's original cauliflower rice is made with lime and cilantro to replicate the flavors of Chipotle's traditional white rice.
"After the success of our Cilantro-Lime Cauliflower Rice last year, we are eager to test a second plant-powered start for any go to order," said Nevielle Panthaky, Chipotle's Vice President of Culinary, in a press release. "Our guests crave real, plant-based options so we developed a new flavor packed recipe."
According to the brand, the initial addition of Cilantro-Lime Cauliflower Rice to the chain's menu led to an increase in sales and a slew of new cauliflower-loving customers. Earnings reports indicate that the brand's total revenue in 2021 increased by a whopping 26% compared to the previous year — although it's unknown how much credit the plant-based rice gets for the bump in sales (via Chipotle).
Now, with the addition of a second cauliflower rice to the menu, grain-averse diners will have even more options for their bowls and salads. As an extra incentive to try the chain's latest veggie base, Chipotle is offering customers free delivery on orders of $10 or more that include Mexican Cauliflower Rice now through June 21.
