Amazon's Eyeing 2,000 Supermarkets

20 shops are already in the works

Amazon wants to be your neighborhood grocery store. The company plans to add 20 stores in the next two years, and if things go well, it could add 200 stores a year for the next 10 years, Business Insider reports. To put that in perspective, Whole Foods has 452 stores in the U.S. and U.K., Trader Joe's has 453 and Walmart has around 5,000 stores in the U.S.

Of the first 20, half will be "click and collect" shops, meaning that shoppers will be picking up an order that's placed online, while the other half will be more traditional grocery stores. The first shops are slated to land in Seattle, New York, Miami, Las Vegas and the Bay Area. What's still unclear is whether shoppers will have to be part of Amazon's Prime Fresh, which costs $15 a month, to shop at these stores.

Either way, we're likely to see an Amazon store pop up soon.
